ALN at St Oswald's School
ALNCo - Mrs. C. Rees
At St Oswald’s VA, we are proud to be a fully inclusive school. We place great value on the support we provide for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), ensuring that every child is nurtured to thrive and succeed.
Our pupils are well supported through strong, positive relationships with families, staff, and external agencies who work closely alongside us. All support, guidance, and interventions are carefully tailored to meet each child’s individual needs and abilities. This provision is monitored and adapted regularly in a pupil-centred way, ensuring that learners remain at the heart of every decision.

We have fully implemented the ALN statutory reform and follow the principles and processes with care and commitment.

The ALN statutory reform has:
-
Brought all previous systems together into one, single system for ALN.
-
Ensured a pupil-centred approach, where pupils and their parents are fully involved in decision-making.
-
Improved transition between settings, supporting pupils as they move through their educational journey.
-
Allowed for greater provision through the medium of Welsh.
-
Created a system that is fair and transparent for all.

Identifying and Supporting Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
At St Oswald’s VA, we recognise that a child may have additional learning needs (ALN) when learning becomes significantly more challenging than it is for other children of a similar age. This may be due to a wide range of difficulties, including:
-
Physical needs (such as sight, hearing, or speech)
-
Emotional or behavioural difficulties
-
Specific learning difficulties, particularly with aspects of language and/or mathematics

Person Centred Planning (PCP)
As part of our provision, we regularly hold Person Centred Planning (PCP) meetings for pupils with ALN. These meetings are very child-focused and are attended by the pupil, parents, school staff, and—where appropriate—other professionals.
During a PCP meeting, the team works together to decide:
-
Whether the child’s needs can be met through Universal Level Provision (differentiated support within the classroom), or
-
Whether the child would benefit from an Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
An IDP is designed for pupils whose needs go beyond what can be provided in the classroom alone. This may include:
-
Specialist support
-
1:1 provision
-
Targeted interventions
We work closely with the Inclusion Service of the Pembrokeshire Local Authority, who provide high-quality support to help us ensure the very best provision for our learners.

Working with Professionals
Our pupils also benefit from the expertise of a range of professionals who regularly visit the school, including:
-
Educational Psychologists
-
Speech and Language Therapists
-
Autism Specialists
-
Behaviour Support Teachers

Partnership with Parents
We place great importance on keeping parents fully informed at every stage of the ALN process. Strong home–school partnerships are central to success, and we deeply value working together with families to ensure the best outcomes for every child.
